2011 Pirates vs 2012 Pirates

Alot of people in the Pittsburgh area, on Twitter, and on Facebook have voiced their concern about whether this 2012 Pirates team is just going to fall into the same category of the 2011 Buccos...they start off hot, and quickly fizzle out into mediocrity.  Here are the stats comparing the two seasons, and I'll let you make your own assumptions about where this 2012 team is headed (all statistics courtesy of baseball-reference.com):

2011 Pittsburgh Pirates
Hitting:
Team Batting Ave: .244
HR: 107
OBP: .309
Slugging: .368

Pitching:ERA: 4.04
CG: 5
Saves: 43
HR: 152
BB: 535

Fielding:Errors: 112
Fielding % : .982

2012 Pittsburgh Pirates (Through 94 Games)
Hitting: Team Batting Ave: .246
HR: 104
OBP: .303
Slugging: .408

Pitching:ERA: 3.49
CG: 1
Saves: 35
HR: 83
BB: 287

Fielding:Errors: 56
Fielding % : .984

So, take a look and tell me what you think.  The statistics show a team that isn't that different from the 2011 season (and I realize that the 2012 team hasn't completed its season yet).  This team is hitting more HRs and is pitching better...that is about what it comes down to.  Slugging and pitching are a big difference in Wins and Losses.  What do you think?

  1. I really expected the 2012 stats to be much better, but surprisingly, they are very similar. What jumps out to me is the HRs. We have almost tied last year's mark and still have a lot of baseball to be played.
