Pens Fans Should Be 'OK' With Lack of Free Agency Movement

While on Twitter yesterday (you can follow me - @bngblitz), the question was posed to Penguins fans "Does it worry you with the Pens lack of movement in Free Agency"?  I answered that question with the answer that it seems everyone else is making moves and we are just sitting in watching...yes it kind of worries me.  However, after some other Pens fans made me realize that the Islanders and Devils also have been very "low key" in free agency, I started to think about this more often.  I thought about it during my workout this morning, and came to one realization.  If all the "experts" are saying that the Penguins are going to be filling some of these empty positions on their roster within the organization, I should be happy.  Look at what the Steelers do.  How often do the Steelers RELY on free agency to fill their needs?  Hardly ever.  I can't think of many free agents that the Steelers have brought in that were actual players on the team on a regular basis.  Hopefully the Penguins are seeing what their cross-town siblings are doing and learning from them.  The Pens have drafted well the past few years, and the Baby Pens have been a legitimate AHL contender year in and year out.  Maybe, just maybe, its time to cool it on the free agent talks and let some young guns come up and prove their worth.  I realize that hockey is a different sport than football, but when it comes to building a franchise, the Penguins should be looking at the Steelers as their model and guide of success and consistency within their sport.  I realize the need to win is NOW with Malkin and Crosby in their prime, but I feel that that need can be filled with little free agent movement.  If Shane Doan decides not to return to Phoenix and come to Pittsburgh, you won't see this Pens fan yelling in screaming, but I would be elated as it would help the team.  I'm guessing the point is this - if the Pens have built a strong feeder system, then they should have the talent to fill the gaps in the NHL lineup...I guess time will tell, but I still like the Pens team this upcoming year.
