The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced that they have cut off all communication / negotiations with WR Mike Wallace until he reports to camp. Mike Wallace's camp has stated that he won't be reporting until a deal gets done. One of my Middle School students could tell you two things: #1 - This could get ugly in a hurry, and #2 - It will come down to who "flinches" first. The Steelers hold most of the power in this situation as they are the ones that would be dealing out the money, as well as giving Wallace a job for the upcoming season. However, Wallace holds a few aces up his sleeve as well. He was a primary target for QB Ben Roethlisberger, and was one of the main reasons (in my humble opinion) that WR Antonio Brown had such a great second half of the season. To the regular fan, they would simply say, "Wallace just needs to get his A$$ to camp so he can play football!", but there is more to it than that. I feel safe saying that Wallace wants to play for Pittsburgh, wants to be at camp, but feels that he should be paid well for his work the last few years.
The debate is ongoing as to who holds the most clout, but I still think this deal could be done without Wallace reporting right away. The Steelers need to stop the macho man stuff and get to some serious talks with Mike and his agent. They need to find out if middle ground can be reached so that all sides are well compensated for the other's business. Can middle ground be reached? That depends on what Wallace's price tag is on himself and how much he is worth on the football field. Reportedly, Wallace wants Larry Fitzgerald money, which anyone in their right mind knows that Fitzgerald is in a completely different league than Wallace except for speed. The Steelers need to be smart here as well. They need to look at the future and decide if signing Wallace is even possible this year. They need to hold some of that money for other possible players who's contracts might be expiring (Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Maurkice Pouncey, etc.). It will be a true test of wills, but I've followed the Steelers my entire adult life, and can say that if there is a team that can get a deal done its Pittsburgh. Wallace just might need to bend a little more than he wants, but they will make him a happy man...hopefully while he is winning Super Bowls with the Black n' Gold!!
