I am starting a new series of posts that will highlight every position on the ice for the Pittsburgh Penguins as they approach the upcoming season. We will highlight the Centers, Wingers, Defense, Goaltenders, Coaching Staff, and even the front office. After all is said and done, I will give that particular position a grade. You will have the option to say whether you agree or disagree in the comments below. Today's position - Goaltenders
Current Goaltenders - Marc Andre-Fleury / Tomas Vokoun / Brent Johnson
Key Departures - We all assume "Johnny" will be leaving via Free Agency after the Vokoun signing.
Analysis -
This is probably one of the most interesting groups on the Penguins roster in my opinion. There are games where Fleury can completely dominate his position, and the game. Then we flashback to the 2012 playoffs where Fleury couldn't stop a beach ball that was shot at him. It is games like that where you wonder how a player that looks so horrible could actually be a starting goalie in the NHL. The offseason is where things get a little interesting for Fleury. Ray Shero went out and signed Tomas Vokoun (formerly of the Washington Capitals). Everyone is asking the same question "what does the Vokoun signing mean for Fleury?" Some are speculating that he is just a reliable back up in case of injury and so Fleury doesn't get run down throughout the course of the long 82 game schedule. Others (myself included) are speculating that Vokoun was brought in to be a potential starter if Fleury decides he is going to crap the bed, which he tends to do from time to time. Vokoun was a dependable starter for the Caps before experiencing some injuries that led to him being passed up on the depth chart. I don't think that Vokoun will start unless Fleury collapses, but I do think that Vokoun being around will help push Fleury to be better...not just let him be complacent with his starting position. This is a group that I feel has improved in the offseason.
Grade - B -
