The "experts" have been saying since the draft that the Steelers did a phenomenal job. I agree 100%. It just seemed like everything fell into place during the draft. With a strong rookie class in camp, and alot of rookies potentially seeing plenty of time, there is one player in mind that I think will be the BIGGEST impact player for this 2012-2013 Steelers team. That player? The former Florida Gators Running Back - Chris Rainey.
Before every Steeler fan reading this says that David DeCastro and Mike Adams will play more and will have more of an impact, I must say that although those players will play more, and will certainly have an impact. The difference in my mind is that Rainey has the ability to make plays that directly impact the game, whereas the other rookies might make a big block, but the RB or WR needs to also make a play. I see the Steelers using Rainey as a Darren Sproles type player who can line up at RB, WR, and even in the slot. Not to mention there is a good chance this kid will be returning kicks and punts on Special Teams. What does that add to? Plenty of opportunities to make some people miss and make IMPACT PLAYS.
One thing I'm especially excited about is the potential for a screen passing game. For years I have seen our aggressive defense blitz on an obvious passing down only to see the offense allowing rushers loose and you get that "uh oh" feeling when the Quarterback dumps the ball over the defense and the running back has daylight with blockers to lead the way. The Steelers would try to throw a screen, but it would look like a pee wee football team trying to run it. What was the problem? The offensive line? The Quarterback? No, I think we never had a running back that was a true threat in the screen game. Chris Rainey fills that role perfectly, and I'm excited to see what this kid can do. Thursday night in Philadelphia will be a great chance to see what this kid can do.
He is going to be a huge impact player. On special teams especially. You talk about his return skills, but he also blocked 6 punts in his career at Florida. I think he'll be all over the place.
