This Season Has Gone From Good to Horrendous FAST |
As a Pirate fan, and I'm sure several of you reading this are the same way, I have been through many disappointing seasons. Some have been so excruciating that its been borderline depressing, while others become almost laughable. I remember watching players collide in the outfield, throwing the ball all over the infield, basically it looked like the movie "Major League" before the team started to come together. That could probably encompass the last 19 years that the Pirates haven't had a winning season. Saying that makes me think back to that fabled 1992 season. The Buccos finished 96-66 and lost in the NLCS when Barry Bonds couldn't throw out Sid Bream from shallow left field from second base. After that, the wheels fell off...the team followed that successful season with a 75-87 season. Absolutely stellar. Some would call that a monumental collapse, and I'm sure NO ONE at that time saw the disaster that has been the Pirates organization since that season. Nonetheless, the Pirates faithful (or Bucco Nation as they now coin themselves) have been through alot, hell we've been through it all. Trades, injuries (who can forget Jason Kendall on the 4th of July shattering his ankle...THAT was nasty), and too many managers to count. With all of that being said, as a fan this season feels like one of the worst. When Kip Wells, Brian Giles, and Tony Womack were on the team you knew they could possibly compete from time to time, but there was no talk of contending. There wasn't even talk of contending THIS year until Andrew McCutcheon carried the team through June and July and almost single-handedly got this team into contention.
Contention was nice...it felt good to wear your Pirates hat places and not feel like it was a dunce cap. Leave it to the Pirates to restore the idiot in all of us. Yesterday's 5-1 loss to the Astros is almost inexplicable. Everything from the play, the coaching, the heart, and the hustle left something to be desired. I hope this was a wakeup call for this young club because they're teetering on the line of letting this slip away. Some might say its already gone, but with the rest of their schedule being pretty favorable there is a chance. I tweeted this out yesterday and I'll say it again. The Pirates and their coaching staff deserve all the criticism in the world, but the one thing they don't deserve is their fans to abandon them. I will complain till I'm blue in the face, but I'm not going to stop following my favorite baseball team. All of Bucco Nation needs to rally around this team and give them the support they need to turn this thing around. You cans still BOO Barajas if hes in the lineup...but that doesn't mean you have given up on the team. It will be interesting to see how this pans out the rest of the way.
